Title
13th century personal lead seal matrix
Description
English: Medieval seal matrix; Cast lead, pointed oval, personal seal matrix of probable 13th century date. The matrix is formed of a broad, flat, pointed oval plate of lead with the seal design carved into one side. The back has a simple cross crudely scratched into it and has an integral suspension loop formed from a strip of lead. The loop is near to the top point of the seal and has been squashed and bent backwards over time. The seal has a central design of a cross-of-wedges with four further wedges radiation between the arms of the cross. There is also a pointed oval to both the top and bottom of this central design. It reads ‘S’ ROBERTI F[I…]AUNCEWS’ (although I am not certain about the ‘W’) which gives a probable translation of ‘Seal of Robert, son of […]auncews’. There is a small knick missing from the bottom of the seal. This is recent damage. Length 38.5mm, width 22.9mm, thickness (with loop) 12.3mm, thickness (plate) 5.6mm, weight 37.33g
