JPEG file comment | MINIATURIST, English
(active c. 1150 in Canterbury) Dover Bible c. 1150 Illumination on parchment Corpus Christi College, Cambridge This illumination is from the opening page of St Matthew's Gospel in the Dover Bible. (The manuscript was made in Canterbury and its name was given because in the fourteenth century it was recorded in the library catalogue of the Dover Priory.) It shows the evangelist holding his manuscript carefully in the fold of his robe and apparently undoing the clasp to open up the text.
