Title
1230 Buckle
Description
English: An incomplete gilded medieval cast copper-alloy single loop spur buckle with an integral plate c.AD 1230-1400.

Description: This buckle is oval in shape with a surviving pin. Some gilding has survived on the integral plate, however most of the plate itself has snapped off, at what would have been a rivet hole. The buckle itself is slightly curved in profile, and has raised ridges either side of the central pin. The back is flat and undecorated. While the frame of the buckle is a brown colour with traces of gilding, the pin is a motled green.

Dimensions: Length 18.75mm, width 13.85mm, thickness 3.22mm and weight 2.44g.

Discussion: There are examples of this buckle that can be found both on the PAS database (<a href="https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/637893" title="View details for HAMP-14AE24">HAMP-14AE24</a>) and in Egan and Pritchard's Dress Accessories book as well as in Whitehead's Buckles book. Egan notes on page 78 that while these buckels are usually associated as spur buckles, he questions the likelyhood of this as their weakness makes them seem not fit for purpose.
