Title |
11th century bridle cheek piece |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete late early-medieval Anglo-Scandinavian cheek piece, dating to the 11th century.
Description: The cheek piece remains as part of the central panel with circular hole for the attachment of the bit, the long central projecting arm to attach it to a strap has broken away. The right of two outwardly facing zoomorphic terminal arms remains with a long neck, trilobed crested head with lentoid eyes and an open mouth. A the base of the neck is an additional flange of metal, with incised decoration likely meant to represent the foot of the beast. The left neck is snapped a short distance from the body of the mount, although the foot survives and appears to mirror the right. The entirely object is mottled mid green and mid red-brown, the reverse is undecorated. as well as the missing beast head and attachment arm the surface of the cheek piece is heavily pitted and the edges abraded. Measurements: 64.49mm wide, 44.81mm long, 5.71mm thick and 38.97g in weight. Discussion: This cheek piece fits a known group of Anglo-Scandinavian inspired bridle fittings described by David Williams (2007, 1-2). The bridle bits would have been used in pairs and each is pierced with a round hole through which the ends of the jointed iron bit (the bar which the horse clenches in its teeth) projected. Sometimes this hole has been worn through friction against the bit, causing the cheek piece to be discarded David Williams (2007, 1). This example fits Williams' type 1, with a fragment of a particularly closely related example coming from Surrey, SUR-E1C4D7. |
