Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Preserved Drewry industrial shunter (of Willington Power Station) restored as a Class "04" 204 hp 0-6-0 diesel mechanical shunter No.11230 (later D2260; 04 260) in early BR black livery at Long Marston, 06/09. It has a "Saxa" type chimney. It's engine is a Gardner 8L3. As the Drewry Car Co. was a sales/marketing company and design bureau and not a builder, the production run of 141 locos were built by Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns and the Vulcan Foundary in 1952-61, although the prototype had been built as a demonstrator in 1947 (developed from the LMS 0-4-0 prototype No.7050 of 1934) and had been used by the LNER. Together with the Class "03", essentially a BR-built version of the "04", these classes were the standard light 0-6-0 shunter for BR and were highly successful. The "04"s were withdrawn earlier than the "03"s, however, between 1967 and 1979, although many then served in private industry, especially the coal and steel industry. Scanned slide taken with a Nikon F65D.
