Summary
[edit]Description10th century, Bronze (8040367739).jpg |
English: 9th/10th century, Bronze, Pala period, Chittagong province, Bangladesh.
This rare bronze originally depicted the ten incarnations, or avatars, of Vishnu. Nine of Vishnu's ten avatars are described in myth as having appeared to combat evil. The future coming of the tenth avatar is expected to mark the end of the current eon. Three of the ten are missing from this set which, if complete, would include: from left to right Matsya the fish (missing), Kurma the tortoise (missing), Varaha the boar, Narasimha the man-lion (missing), Vamana the dwarf, Parasurama the hero, Rama the divine hero, Krishna, Buddha, and Kalki, the avatar yet to come. Achives of Asain Art, Vol. 34, (1981), p. 97. |
