| Description | A recent addition to the Department of Agriculture’s People’s Garden in Washington, DC , are the Van Rose benches. These benches were created from a single Sugar Maple tree that overlooked a children’s garden at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY. The tree was planted at the time of the college’s founding in 1925. The tree had to be removed for a major renovation project and Professor Jack Elliot, a builder of sustainable furniture prototypes salvaged part of this historical tree. The Van Rose benches are named after the founders of the College of Human Ecology at Cornell University, Martha Van Rensselaer and Flora Rose. USDA photo 10di1383-03 |
