English: Name: Emmaus Nicopolis Monastery Description: There was a Roman-Byzantine district city in the lowlands, on the eastern edge of the Ayalon Valley, near the east of the Latron interchange. The original name of the city was "Chamat", after the hot healing springs in it, and this name was changed during the Roman period to the Greek name "Emmaus". There was a large Jewish community in the city. עברית: שם: מנזר אמאוס ניקופוליס תיאור: הייתה עיר מחוז רומית-ביזנטית בשפלה, בשוליו המזרחיים של עמק איילון, בסמוך ממזרח למחלף לטרון. שמה המקורי של העיר היה "חמת", על שם מעיינות המרפא החמים שבה, ושם זה שובש בתקופה הרומית לשם היווני "אמאוס". בעיר התקיימה קהילה יהודית גדולה. הערות: הצלבנים מצאו את אמאוס-ניקופוליס הרוסה ונטושה והקימו כנסייה קטנה על חורבות הכנסייה הבינזטית החרבה. בשלהי התקופה הממלוכית בארץ ישראל קם במקום הכפר הערבי עמואס, ששימר את השם אמאוס. הכנסייה הצלבנית ננטשה לכל המאוחר ב-1674, אך עדיין ניצבה על תילה ושמשה לאחסון חיות בית. ב-1878, ביום שני של הפסחא, התגלה למרים בוארדי, נזירה כרמליתית מבית לחם, חזיון בו ראתה מקום עליו נאמר לה "זה המקום בו ישוע ברך את הלחם, בביתם של תלמידי אמאוס. שבועיים אחר כך הזדמנה הנזירה לאמאוס-ניקופוליס וזיהתה את המקום. מיקום: מנזר אמאוס קובץ מקורי: PICT0090.JPG |
