Przewozy Regionalne (or PolRegio to give it the more recently catchy branding) 2-car SA133 DMU is seen during a 15 minute booked stop at the first Polish station over the border from Lithuania on train R141, 09:15 Kaunas to Białystok on 7 May 2018. This is the first stage of the Rail Baltica project which is to extend standard (1435mm) gauge across the Baltic States eventually through to Tallinn in Estonia. The initial stage was to build through to Kaunas where a single standard gauge track has been built along side the Russian gauge (1520mm) from Sestokai which was the former gage interchange station. Train frequency isn't brilliant - just 5 trains each way per week amnd only over weekends. To make this journey my whole trip starting off from home on Saturday 5 May had to revolve around the 09:15 Kaunas to Białystok on the Monday morning. The Polish trains connect at Kaunas both ways with an EMU worked service to Vilnius. This is always likely to be the case even when the next stage of Rail Baltica north from Kaunas to Latvia is built due to the the geographic position of Vilnius which is well off anywhere near a straight line through the Baltic States. The Polish train reverses at Suwałki and carries onto Białystok where it connects with electric worked InterCity services on the mainline to Warszawa. Journey time is slow, from Kaunas to Białystok is 5 hours factoring in the one hour time difference and very slack timings. For those wanting to head from Vilnius through Latvia to Estonia by rail, it is possible albeit not daily and with a change of train at one of the border stations. More details of connections from Poland through the Baltic states can be found on the very useful seat61.com website. |
