| Description |
12-car "Hastings" DEMU formation a long way from home. As already detailed with other photographs, the mid-1980s were to be the swansong for the popular units. As such, they were chartered for some long distance railtours well beyond the Southern Region. On 5 January 1985, 6L sets 1017 and 1032 were assigned to work 1Z27, 07:20 Watford Junction through to several branches in South Wales. Seen here at Maerdy Colliery is the "Cyrmru DEMU" tour during a 12 minute photo-stop. It was amazing how often several hundred participants managed to leap off the train, climb up steep embankments and then rejoin the train in the short space of time! Tour operator was again Hertfordshire Railtours. Myself and many others living in the South East of England would be regular travelers as they would start and pick up in the London/M25 catchment area. |
