Description

Mask with Superstructure, Multiple Beaks (and Figures) – Bayiri / BWA, Western Burkina Faso Masks of the BWA Peoples are among the most abstract anywhere in Africa. Unlike European artists which struggled for centuries to recreate nature, and represent spirit beings as humans, Africans have used abstract forms to communicate ideas. Their images do not imitate nature; as they have rarely attempted to do so. Tall plank masks represent spirits of nature and new life named Bayiri. They are made of medium-weight wood and danced during the dry season. However, Southern BWA wood masks are danced frequently. Reference LAND OF THE FLYING MASKS, Art And Culture In BURKINA FASO. The Thomas G.B. Wheelock Collection. This mask looks wonderful hanging or standing independantly away from a wall where it can be viewed from all sides. It measures 168cm = 5.5 foot. Will ship from the USA.
