Summary

[edit]
Description

January 1972 saw British Rail close the 9.5 mile branch from Wareham to Swanage. Soon after closure, a local preservation outfit was formed with the aim of running an all year round community railway with steam special during the peak season. However the community railway never took off due to lack of local council funding. Instead the railway grew slowly as a tourist attraction gradually extending from Swanage back towards Norden by 1995. The final stretch was to reinstate the line back to Worgret Junction on the main Bournemouth to Weymouth route. A temporary connection was made in 2002 with the permanent one opening in 2007.

In 2009 the first public charter trains ran on to the Swanage Railway and in the summer of 2017 a regular service between Swanage and Wareham was introduced. To comply with Network Rail, stock and locos were hired in from West Coast Railways and trains were allocated a 10 minute stop on platform 2 at Wareham.

Seen here on Saturday 2 September which will be the last weekend of operation for the 2017 season, 37518 has brought in 2Z36, 12:36 Swanage to Wareham. The stock is former Weymouth line 4TC set now owned by London Underground.
