The two temples facing each other

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Shiva temple group in Thanegaon village is located to the south of Armori town in far eastern Maharashtra. It is one of many historic Hindu temples attributed to the Gond dynasty and Gondi people heritage – classified as a tribe since the colonial era.

The site has several Hindu temples next to a pushkarini. Of the original temples, two have survived. These face each other. The larger one has a sixteen pillared mandapa and is dedicated to Shiva, while the other in front was probably dedicated to Parvati. The temples have a square plan and follow the Nagara-style of architecture. A notable feature here is the elaborate structure above mandapa – it consists of nine phamsana-style small spires with each crowned with an amalaka.

Note: There are several Thanegaon in Maharashtra. This site is in Gadchiroli district.
