Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Anchaleshwar temple – also spelled Anchalesvara or Achalesvar mandir – is a group of Hindu temples and other monuments built between the 12th and 18th century on the banks of a river next to the small but historic Gond fort in Chandrapur.

The main Anchalesvar temple is from the Maratha period, while the smaller phamsana-style temple is pre-13th century. The Anchalesvar illustrates the Maratha style where Hindu art from all major and regional Hindu traditions was included in the main temple. These include artwork from the Shiva, Vishnu, Devi, Surya, Ganesha, Dattatreya, Vithala traditions. Further, the temple includes panels showing legends from the Vedas, the Mahabharata (Bhagavad Gita), the Ramayana, the Panchatantra and others.

The phamsana temple at this site is also notable for the artwork in shikhara. Typically, the phamsana style places flat stone slabs to achieve a pyramidal spire. However, the Anchaleswar temple illustrates the sophisticated evolution where artwork was included in the phamsana layers.
