English: The Basu Kedar group of temples, also called the Basukedar Shiva temples, are a group of stone temples in Basukedar village of Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand state of India. The complex and the village are on an ancient hiking trail that led Hindu pilgrims from the rest of India to the Kedarnath temple. The region and the pilgrimage trail is known for over a hundred orchids and mountain flowers. The temples are locally believed to be linked to the Mahabharata legends and as a spot where Shiva stopped prior to Kedarnath.
The temples complex consist of 18 temples, with the main temple and several others dedicated to Shiva. The others are dedicated to Parvati, Ganesha, Kartikeya, Vishnu, Surya, Brahma and other deities of Hinduism. The main temple is notable for its Himalayan architecture found from Kashmir to Nepal, while many smaller temples are variations of the square plan Nagara temple architecture. The main temple has a small mandapa that has been restored in the modern era. The complex is difficult to date because of erosion and vandalism. The oldest structure is likely from 9th to 11th century. |
