Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Shri Gopala mandir, also called Bansigopala temple, is a 16th-century stone temple near Chamba palace in north Himachal Pradesh. It is dedicated to flute-playing Krishna who statue is made from black marble and who stands with Radha. The temple can be dated based on the copper plate grant of 1595 CE which mentions grant of land and village revenues by Raja Balbadhra to support the temple. Thus, the temple existed prior to 1595 CE. The temple has a square plan and Nagara style shikhara. The entrance is flanked by Ganga and Yamuna goddesses with each holding a water pot. The temple is notable for the Hindu artwork that show maithuna (amorous) scenes. Other notable artwork include those of Surya, Durga Mahisasuramardini, Harihara (half Vishnu, half Shiva), sleeping Vishnu, and three faced Vishnu (Narayana, Narasimha and Varaha faces).
