Summary
[edit]Description0042423 Gauri Shankar temple, Jagatsukh Himachal Pradesh 058.jpg |
English: The Gauri Shankar temple of Jagatsukh, also referred to as Miniature Shiva temple by ASI, is an 8th to 9th-century stone temple built in an era after Naggar and Jagatsukh became two important trade and pilgrimage hubs in Kullu–Manali valleys.
The Gauri-Shankar temple has a square plan sanctum and has a Shiva-linga inside. Behind the Shiva-linga is a statue of Gauri-Shankar. In front is a portico supported by fluted-pillars. The triratha vimana has a Nagara-style shikhara. The outer walls of the sanctum have niches, wherein Surya is enshrined in the east, Vishnu on the south, and Brahma on the north. These artwork show signs of mutilation and erosion. The front of the temple's shikhara has a bhadramukha in the sukhanasi, and the yogi Lakulisa in padmasana with namaste posture. The sanctum doorway has three sakhas (bands) of foilage artwork, while Ganesha is on the lalatabimba. Inside the sanctum, along the walls, the temple has preserved some broken historic ruins – their origin is unknown. |
