Description

Sepia photographic studio portrait postcard of a soldier, who is identified on the back as 1397 Private H. Hughes of 3rd Light Trench Mortar Battery. Hughes, a 26 year old miner from Carmel, Carnarvonshire, Wales, UK, enlisted in the AIF at Kurri Kurri, NSW, on 5 June 1916. He was killed in action by artillery fire on 12 October 1917 serving on the Western Front in the 35th Infantry Battalion AIF during the second battle of Passchendaele. The postcard was published by The Calloway Studios, Kurri Kurri & Cessnock.
