Summary

[edit]
Description Lighting a fire in a pit on the floor in the Atashgah fire temple for worship with fire meant smoke, so that means a vent on the ceiling for the smoke to escape from. The floor pit and roof vent are intact in this room, they have been sealed off in others as the many rooms in the complex have been converted as offices, display areas, exhibitions, a site office and a gift shop etc. Detailed notes about this temple complex appeared earlier on in this album. Some scholars have speculated that Ateshgah may have been an ancient Zoroastrian shrine that was decimated by invading Islamic armies during the Muslim conquest of Persia and its neighboring regions. It has also been asserted that according to historical sources, even before the construction of the Indian Temple of Fire (Atashgah) in Surakhani at the end of the 17th century, the local people also worshipped at this site because of the 'seven holes with burning flame'.
