| Description |
한국어: '번와장'이란 지붕의 기와를 잇는 장인을 말한다. 우리나라에서 언제부터 기와를 사용했는지 정확히 알 수 없지만 출토유물로 보아 삼국시대부터 본격적으로 사용되었던 것으로 추정된다. 따라서 이 시기부터 번와와공이 시작되었다고 할 수 있다. 이후 삼국시대의 기와기술은 더욱 발달하여 기록에 의하면 ‘와박사(瓦博士)’라는 장인이 있었고, 이들은 일본에 건너가 기와기술을 전해주기도 하였다고 한다. 조선시대에는 태조 원년(1392)에 ‘와서(瓦署)’를 설치하여 기와를 생산하도록 하였으며, 태종 6년(1406)에는 ‘별와요(別瓦窯)'에서 기와를 보급하도록 하였다. 별와요에는 와장을 비롯하여 승려도 배치하여 대대적으로 기와를 제작하기도 하였다. |
