English: Dr. Shitaro Kawai, PhD in forestry, was commissioned by the Government-General of Taiwan to investigate the mountain in 1902. He noted that the quality and reserves of timber were excellent, and recommended it to be developed. In the following year, Shinpei Goto, Head of Civilian Affairs of the Government-General of Taiwan, decided to develop Alishan, and instructed the Ministry of Railways to plan a railway line and the Bureau of Productive Industries to investigate the amount of timber reserves. Two years later, technician Tomijiro Ogasawara submitted a report confirming that the timber reserves were abundant. In October 1904, Goto led a group of more than 100 people, including the Director General of the Bureau of Productive Industries, Tatsumi Iwai, to investigate Alishan. The names of Goto Rock, Iwai Mountain (today Zhushan), Hasegawa River (today Changguchuan River), and Kawai River (today Alishan River) were named after the surnames of several important participant of this expedition. |
