牛糞の山 （東蒙古）

風も凍るであらう沙漠の冬を、凌ぐべき唯一の燃料は、乾燥した牛糞である。かくて一塊の牛糞も、このあたりでは珠玉の如く取扱はれ、その貯藏の多少は、家畜の大小から、更に財產の多少にまで演繹される考現資料であるが、春から秋までの蒙古部落の周圍は、この乾燥牛糞によつて、山が築かれるのだ。｜（一九三〇撮影）（印畫の複製を禁ず）
