English: Statue of Herakles (ancient Greek: Ἡρακλῆς, 'glory/fame of Hera') . Found in 1992 in front of the stage of the Perga theatre. Roman, end of second century AD. 2,8 m. high. Herakles was the son of Zeus (Ancient Greek: Ζεύς "life" because he was the first child of Kronos (ancient Greek Χρόνος from χρόνος "time") and Alcmene (ancient Greek Ἀλκμήνη). He killed his own three children in a fit of madness sent by Hera (ancient Greek, Ἥρα, word of disputed origin) a wrong which he redressed by performing twelve labours. Those labours can be seen on a couple of sarcophagi in the museum, they were amongst the most popular themes in art. The statue was broken in many pieces, several missing. The left hand holds a broken arrow, over that arm a lion’s skin is thrown, below it the club he used as a weapon on many occasions and a bull’s head. A quiver containing arrows is visible at the other side, where a gazelle raises its head next to the support. It is close to the type "Farnese Hercules" but not identical to it. The statue was placed on the second floor of the stage building together with the large statues of Dionysus (Ancient Greek: Διόνυσος from Mycenaean Greek di-wo-nu-so-jo possibly "son of Zeus”), Marsyas (Ancient Greek: Μαρσύας) and Hermes (Ancient Greek: Ἑρμῆς from ἕρμα, "stone heap."). These statues are also exhibited in Antalya Museum. English: The statue of Hercules from the theater of the city Perga |
