English: The traditional burial rite in Rome was cremation. However, in the second century AD, the rite of mortification became widespread among the Roman elite. This led to an increase in demand for sarcophagi. Many of these sarcophagi were made of marble quarried in regions such as Docimium (Greek: Δοκίμια) inPhrygia (Greek: Φρυγία) (modern Turkey), Garland sarcophagus are a type of Roman sarcophagi that are intricately decorated with garlands, floral motifs, foliage, and sometimes fruit. These designs were often carved in high relief and covered all four sides of the sarcophagus. The garlands and other decorations symbolized the real foliage and fruit that adorned altars and tombs. The garlands hold winged goddesses or personifications at the corners, and figures ofEros (Ancient Greek: Ἔρως, 'Love, Desire') at the sides. The lids of the sarcophagi were shaped like the roof of a temple, with triangular pediments at each end. The sarcophagus was a mini temple that represented the deceased as a hero. English: Garland sarcophagus |
