Littera åsattes först 1876: B. 1886: Bb, 1890: Bb1. Prins August var SJ:s första loktyp för tågtjänst. Sex lok anskaffades 1856. Tre till Västra stambanan. Tre till Södra stambanan, SSB, Malmö-Lund. Prins August, Prins Carl, Prins Oscar. Elva lok tilldelades SSB 1856-1864, vilka 1864 anpassades till SJ gemensam nr-serie genom höjning med 40. Lok SSB 3 blev 43. Prins August fick vid 1942 års renovering tillbaka nr 3. Prins August blev återställd kring 1940 och 1955 i leveransutförande med bl.a. utbytt ångpanna, nytillverkad skorsten, nya skyltar och mässingsdetaljer. Prins August avställdes 1906 "för ett eventuellt järnvägsmuseum". Loket upprustades till körbart skick till SJ 100-årsjubileum 1956 och visades upp på museets bangård under egen ånga på museets 100 årsjubileum den 23 maj 2015. Prins August är av statens första loktyp. Den är av världsintresse som ett av flera lokomotiv från Beyer, Peacock & Co som exporterade högteknologi till flera länder kring 1860 när järnvägen fick sitt stora genombrott. Pring August är världens äldsta fungerande ånglok i sin originalteknik.
