Title |
'Langton Down' type Roman brooch |
||
Description |
English: Incomplete Romano-British brooch of Langton Down type. This brooch has complete side wings that are cylindrical in shape. These hold the remains of the separate (eight?) coiled spring, but the spring chord and pin shaft are missing. The bow is sharply angled at the head. It is wide and straight and tapers slightly to a broad pointed end, which is damaged in this instance. The head is decorated with three raised lined running horizontally. The bow is decorated with a centrally raised pair of lines, which is flanked to either edge of the face of the bow with a further raised line. The reverse of the brooch is plain. The catchplate is almost entirely missing, with only two raised lugs remaining, with a raised ‘seam’ running between them. The brooch is abraded with a brown patina with flashes of light green. The brooch is 46.98mm long, 19.92mm wide across the wings, 9.30mm wide across the bow, 1.67mm thick and weighs 7.22g. Brooches of this type date to between c43-60AD. An example can be seen in Hattatt 1982, figure 29, number 39. |
