Description

Op donderdag 18 maart 1943 om ongeveer half vier arriveerden twaalf Australische bommenwerpers boven Maassluis met als doel de olieraffinaderij Witol aan de Heldringstraat. Witol lag aan de rand van het oude centrum. De raffinaderij kreeg slechts één treffer in een loods, het oude centrum daarentegen werd zwaar getroffen. Er vielen achttien doden. Voor het gedenkteken (1955) is een plaquette aangebracht waarop staat: ‘Ter herinnering bombardement 18 maart 1943’. Rondom het monument liggen in een halve cirkel 19 granieten tegels waarop de namen en de leeftijden van de slachtoffers zijn aangebracht.
