Title |
'Eye' motif Grooved Ware |
||
Description |
English: A slightly abraded fragment of a ceramic vessel. It is a tapered, slightly inward pointing rim sherd. The top of the rounded rim is nicked by a diagonally angled finger nail. Another one appears to have been on the left break, pitched at the same angle and 7mm apart. About 15mm below the nail decoration, small nails pinching or another method have modelled an 'almond eye' motif. The depression around the left of it is scooped up to make the convex form. The ceramic fabric is dark reddish brown and is well gritted with 1-2mm corroded white felspar, likely a gabbroic clay from The Lizard, Cornwall. There are also small black augite and mica grits. A red soft smudge in the fabric might be crushed ceramic(grog). This pot sherd appears to be Grooved Ware. This is an outlier from 2 large groups of the type found in this field and identified as such by Henrietta Quinnell. |
