Summary
[edit]Description"Who is Herman Wallace" - geograph.org.uk - 865449.jpg |
English: "Who is Herman Wallace?" Tile affixed low down on the corner of Whitecross Street and Old Street. By artist Carrie Reichardt See http://carriereichardt.com/
http://carriereichardt.com/?s=herman+wallaceThe answer to the question is that Herman Wallace is a prisoner in the Louisiana State Penitentiary (Angola Prison) who has been held in solitary confinement in a 6' by 9' cell for over 40 years, accused of a murder for which there is strong evidence he did not commit. (See the Amnesty report.) The tile was produced by activist and Craftivist Carrie Reichardt. An artist closely connected with the Angola 3 of which Herman Wallace is a member. This tile is a form of "Craftivism" and is meant to publicise and spread news of the plight of Herman Wallace and many other Black Panther activists still in prison today. The Tile also works as a form of publicity for an exhibition at the Royal College of Art which is a collaboration between Herman Wallace and artist Jackie Sumell about his current living conditions and his ideal house, based on a long-running correspondence between the two.
