Description

Mosaïque "The Kiss" dans le hall d'entrée de la Tour du mariage (Wedding tower, Hochzeitsturm) mosaïque de Friedrich Wilhelm Kleukens 1914

La tour du mariage a été conçue par l'architecte Joseph Maria Olbrich (1867-1908) pour servir de signal à la colonie d'artistes jugendstil et honorer son fondateur le Grand-Duc de Hesse. Elle est surmontée d'une couronne à cinq doigts

La tour a été érigée en 1908 sur la Mathildenhöhe (la colline de Mathilde) à l'initiative de la ville de Darmstadt en l'honneur du second mariage du Grand-Duc Ernst Ludwig de Hesse (Louis V de Hesse) qui avait eu lieu en 1905 avec Eléonore de Solms-Hohensolm-Lich.

Très dégradée après la dernière guerre comme tous les bâtiments de la colline dont certains avaient été détruits par les bombardements alliés, l'extérieur et l'intérieur de la tour ont été totalement restaurés de 1982 à 1990 dans le cadre de la rénovation de la Mathildenhöhe.

Dans ce lieu emblématique et culturel de Darmstadt, la ville offre la possibilité d'organiser des fêtes et propose une grande salle décorée appelée la chambre du mariage pour la cérémonie civile.
