PLANATORY NOTE. only of the bird is given, as the ah-eady existing manuals containvery full descriptions, and the marked coloring and form areitalicized. The haunts named are the most characteristic of thespecies; but birds are often found in strangely unexpectedplaces. In this volume there are described in full one hundred andseventy-three of the birds most often met with in New Englandand the Appendix contains nearly all other birds known to occurwithin these states. If the volume contained a full descriptionof all the New England birds, it would make such a cumbersomebook that it could not be readily taken into the field. The one hundred and twenty-four cuts have been drawn withthe greatest care and accuracy, and represent every genus ofthe species treated in the body of the book. These cuts, it is hoped, will form a substantial means for theidentification of New England Birds. The nomenclature adopted is that of the American Ornitho-logists Union. WOODLAND BIRDS. General Plumage: Upper parts reddish chestnut, gray and black, head markedAvith bufl and black, tail grayish; under parts duller andmore buff, lighter on chin. Immature showing more gray.Peculiarly placed eye. Bill brownish, feet dark reddish.Length about 11.00. Song and Other Notes: A weird musical spring song given with both voice andwings while in the air and a grating cry when upon theground, like peent.
