A charity paid $22,000 to install these tiles on the basketball court in Crombie Park near the corner of Berkeley and the Esplanade. The individual tiles lock together and are then screwed down. This design allows for damaged tiles to be replaced, restoring the whole surface, as good as new. The tiles were extensively damaged in July 2013 when a special anti-drug police team, chasing a drug suspect, drove onto the court, and couldn't get out. About 40 percent of the tiles were torn up through the police officer's fruitless brute force attempts to jump a curb that, in the light of day, was too high to jump. Embarrassed off-duty police officers, and their supporters, removed all the tiles the next day, rather merely salvaging the serviceable tiles, and replacing the broken ones. |
