I originally uploaded this based on the Library of Congress's information implying it was a PD-US photo by Underwood & Underwood. Now, based on Image:Emmeline Pankhurst arrested 2.jpg, it seems it was taken by Jimmy Sime, who for at least some of his career worked for the Central Press Agency, a UK company. Searching gettyimages.com reveals that Sime worked until at least 1965. The photo is probably neither PD-US nor PD-old. (This DR applies to Image:Emmeline Pankhurst arrested 2.jpg as well.) dave pape (talk) 20:09, 23 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Are you really going to make me dig up an example of this image being published in the US before 1923? It's a rather famous photo you know. Kaldari (talk) 20:14, 23 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's a British photo though, so Commons has to apply British law. -Nard the Bard 20:38, 23 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Stupid British copyright laws. When are they going to fix those? Kaldari (talk) 21:23, 23 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment - Looking through the Getty Images archives, which is where I got the Jimmy Sime attribution, it looks like they commonly mis-attribute images, and even give the same image conflicting dates and attributions (check out Harriet Tubman, for example). I'm not really sure how much we can trust the information from Getty on this. Kaldari (talk) 18:28, 28 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that they sometimes show a definite sloppiness regarding older images (such as crediting Apollo XI photos to a "Time Life stringer"), but when they actually do give a specific person's name, such as this, it usually seems trustworthy. A Sime bio would be helpful, if one wanted to question Getty's attribution. --dave pape (talk) 19:16, 28 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
