Artist's date of death is irrelevant. What matters is when the copyright expired, which won't be until 2026/27 if formalities were followed (likely given the series popularity). Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:45, 30 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The flyleaf of the 1931 US edition says the illustrations are by Studley O. Burroughs, the nephew of the author Edgar Rice Burroughs.[1] Whether the artist's date of death is relevant depends on which country's copyright laws are applicable. It seems likely that this book was first published in the US and that the cover illustration was not published earlier elsewhere, so we should apply COM:USA and COM:HIRTLE. If the book was first published without a copyright notice, or if the copyright was not renewed, then the cover is public domain. If the copyright was renewed then it will become public domain in 2027. I have not found it in the Stanford University Copyright Database, but I am not experienced with searching there.
