This file is superseded by File:Six Vilayets (Western Armenia) ethnic groups.png. Only one file should be kept to reduce maintance. (The gif version can be found in the file history of the png as of 18:07, 8. Jun. 2011) McZusatz (talk) 06:15, 6 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Delete as redundant. --P199 (talk) 03:24, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Keep We do not delete superceded versions generally, instead we keep original versions to keep the provenance history. I fail to understand the desire to "reduce maintenance" - we can save human time (user and admin time) by not deleting these images, instead just place them in specific categories. See Commons:Superseded images policy, and for what it is worth I agree with David Levy's last comments here and that some form of appropriate categorizing would be far better than deletion. -84user (talk) 22:37, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Comment: In general you are right. We should not delete superseded images for several reasons... But this one is different:
  • The gif is not! the source image for a derived version and thus it can't provide a archival purpose.
  • The gif is in fact a "{{Duplicate}}" of one or more old versions of the png file: old png, GIF
  • The whole edit history is stored in the png file. (Text based edits as well as graphical edits). So changing any category, description, filename (done recently) or image content needs to be done on BOTH images. (Leading into waste of time)
Thus:  Delete. --134.60.84.148 11:13, 21 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting, and thanks for those well-presented points, however in this case there is now more reason to  Keep : the PNG is no longer the same as the GIF as it has flags added, so keeping two versions gives reusers more choice. A minor point is that the GIF is not quite an exact duplicate of the older PNG revision - the image looks the same but the GIF has an unnecessarily larger palette, normally ignorable. An important side issue is that we should not be changing maps like this, instead create different images under new filenames. That would obviate the maintenance burden. -84user (talk) 18:18, 22 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
