Date unknown, so impossible to know if the image is PD or not. Image needs to have been PD in Canada by 1946 to meet Commons requirement (i.e. in the public domain in Canada prior to the URAA date of January 1, 1996), but hard to know if this is pre or post 1946.

No evidence at source that image is freely-licensed (in fact, watermark suggests otherwise). Skeezix1000 (talk) 00:00, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Keep -- We can't know the exact date, but look at the cars. Well before 1946 cars had curved bodies. The cars visible in this image have the angular designs of cars made 10 years before 1948.
WRT the copright claim in the visible watermark -- if it would have expired by now, then surely it is irrelevant?. Geo Swan (talk) 00:41, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Good point. Although the combination of the Depression followed by WWII would undoubtedly have meant that not everyone had late model cars in the late 1940s. Even a street scene photographed today will often contain some 10+ year old cars. We do sometimes use the design of cars in the background of a photo to help date an image, but it's usually where the PD status is clear and we're simply trying to guess at the date for the purpose of the image description.

You are absolutely correct about the watermark. I mentioned it more in terms of the other (besides PD) ground for keeping an image on the Commons -- that it be freely-licensed. As an aside, do you think there is some value in asking Curt Frey is he would be willing to freely-license some of his streetcar photos? --Skeezix1000 (talk) 13:45, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
