As was noted by User:PePeEfe on the discussion page last February, the person pictured here is NOT Josef von Sternberg. It is an unidentified person. In the uncropped original version of the picture, Sternberg is the man on the LEFT. The picture is wrongly used to illustrate more than twenty wikipedia articles on Sternberg, and should either be deleted, or replaced by a crop of the man on the LEFT in the uncropped version. Just wanted to at least fix the cats here and the picture on Wikidata (which would reduce the usage of the pic in wikipedias ...). But I'm not so sure anymore. This could be Sternberg, as could be the other guy in the source file.
Maybe anyone can get the japanese paper and look it up there (maybe the description was wrong?!). Or some more users are sure, who is who. --Mirer (talk) 00:05, 1 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The translation from Japanese is "Joseph von Sternberg (left) visiting Japan in 1936" (1936年の訪日時のジョセフ・フォン・スタンバーグ(左端)). I have added another link to a photo from the time, where the filmmaker is seen wearing very similar high boots (or the same ones). I have no doubts that Von Sternberg is the one on the left and that this whole issue stems from a small translation error. --PePeEfe (talk) 08:51, 1 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Keep. Under COM:NPOV and COM:INUSE, the identification issue should be resolved on the many Wikipedias where the file is used. Only once it's unused should it be deleted here. --bjh21 (talk) 10:34, 1 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Comment: Alternatively, a bold contributor might just re-crop the source image correctly... --bjh21 (talk) 10:35, 1 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
There are better photos for a crop than that one. If this is not Sternberg, the picture can be deleted. If someone identifies this man, he can be recropped an better named. --Mirer (talk) 15:32, 1 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Kept: bjh21 is correct. Concerns that a given image is incorrect/inaccurate are ones of COM:SCOPE, and files legitimately in use cannot be deleted for that reason ("A media file that is in use on one of the other projects of the Wikimedia Foundation is considered automatically to be useful for an educational purpose." (COM:INUSE)) This request is thus premature; the concern should be raised on the projects using the image and, once it has been universally removed, a new DR can be opened on that basis (i.e., its removal from all sister projects as inaccurate would support a claim that it lacks educational utility.). --Эlcobbola talk 21:33, 24 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
