Website says "Fotografiene nedenfor kan benyttes i redaksjonelle oppslag", "these photos can be used in editorial spreads". No proof of licence. -mattbuck (Talk) 02:10, 21 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mattbuck,

I am special adviser to mr Rytman, and the photograph in question is specifically released into public domain by mr Rytman for any use regarding mr Rytman, provided the photographer, a mr Børge Sandnes, is credited, and provided the photograp is not used in any illegal or immoral context, such as, but not limited to, defamation of mr Rytman.

I am not that familiar with Wikimedia, but I tried to use the copyright tag when I uploaded the picture. It seems that I've failed at my attempt. I would very much appreciate your assistance in correcting the copyright information, so that the picture may still be used with the article about mr Rytman here on Wikipedia.

If you require any further documentation please let me know.

If it would help, I could specify, in English, the terms of use of the photograph on mr Rytman's website, www.rytman.no.

Sincerely,

Tony Caffrey Special Adviser to mr Rytman

Tony,
Thanks for responding so quickly, hopefully we can solve this easily. I should first warn you that "public domain" means something quite different to what you think it means - "releasing something into the public domain" means that there are no copyright restrictions: no one has to attribute, no limits to what it can be used for, etc.
By the sounds of it, what you probably want is {{CC-BY}}, the Creative Commons Attribution licence, which states that anyone can use it for any purpose, as long as the author is credited, but not in a manner which implies their support for whatever you use the image for. Regarding use in illegal or immoral context, that's not something Commons can really specify, we just tag things with {{Personality rights}}.
Yes, a notice on the website would help, in whatever language you please. Alternatively, email our OTRS team. -mattbuck (Talk) 22:55, 21 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again,
I believe that I've managed to tag the photograph correctly now. Mr Rytmans blog has also been updated, so that it clearly states under which provisions the photographs may be used freely. http://rytman.no/pressefotografier/

Kept: OK, thanks for clearing this up. I would like to point out that CC licences require the explicit statement of licence (eg "licensed under Creative Commons Attribution licence version 1.0", but I'm happy to accept it's free. -mattbuck (Talk) 15:26, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
