This map of Italy in 1328 suffers from a huge range of mistakes, it's oversimplified and suffers from poor design choices. Sir Iain (talk) 14:58, 11 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  1. The Republic of Genoa is too large, it reaches even to Toulon in the Provence.
  2. The Papal states are too large.
  3. Venice is too large and encompasses parts of the en:Patriarchate of Aquileia (state).
  4. States like Savoy and Milan are not shown, as they were still part of the HRE. Genoa was just as much a member of the Empire as Milan, but the map implies it was independent like Venice.
  5. The Kingdom of the Two Sicilies was still known as the kingdom of Sicily. Furthermore, in 1328 the kingdom was already divided into Sicily and Napels.

Seems more like a case for {{Disputed map}} (or for fixing it yourself). It's currently in use so it is automatically considered educational for Commons' purposes. darkweasel94 21:04, 11 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I was unaware that {{Disputed map}} existed, thanks. I'll tag the file with that template.
Doesn't Commons have their own quality standards? If something is so obviously wrong, it should be deleted.
I could fix it, but I'd need to start from scratch and it would take a lot of time. Sir Iain (talk) 10:14, 12 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Please see Commons:Project scope/Neutral point of view. In general we do not decide whether something is obviously wrong - we only decide whether it is realistically useful for an educational purpose. Being in use on a Wikimedia project is considered a sufficient criterion that it is useful for an educational purpose. Everything else would mean that we decide content disputes for other projects, which would lead to totally unnecessary disputes here on Commons. You can remove it from the pages where it is used, or propose that on the respective talk pages; then the premises will be different. That being said, we are currently having a discussion on whether to reform that policy - I invite you to participate there. darkweasel94 10:28, 12 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the clarification. I had never seen those pages, in a sense it seems reasonable from the viewpoints of commons, even though commons seems to forget that many wikipedia simply use what's available instead of consciously selecting (or rejecting!) a media file for their articles. Seems the only proper way is to created a new and accurate map and replacing the old one before a file can be deleted. Sir Iain (talk) 15:38, 12 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Kept: Maps are not deleted for being inaccurate. Please fix them instead! FASTILY 08:28, 21 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
