This is a portrait photo of a German gun designer who died in 1953, taken from some website and said to be from ca. 1930.

The photo is claimed to be anonymous per the {{Anonymous-EU}} template, but "I don't know the author" is not anonymous, and that tag isn't applicable to German works anyway, since German law says that pre-1995 anonymous works are only really anonymous if the author was never publicly disclosed anywhere, not even in a lecture or similar. One cannot prove that, so pre-1995 "anonymous" works from Germany are not suitable for Commons (or de.wp). Images from ca. 1930 are also not old enough to assume that they must be in the PD, since the authors easily could have lived beyond 1949. So the file should be deleted per the precautionary principle. Rosenzweig τ 00:51, 2 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Keep What you propose is correct, but following that same criteria, more than half of the images in categories Anonymous-EU and Unknown (author) would have to be eliminated in order to maintain the precautionary principle. The photograph I published was taken notably when Hugo was middle-aged. In addition there was an error in the title since he isn't hold an MP28 but an MP18, so the image could be from 1920. Here you can see another photograph where he is seen even more adult, which confirm that in this image he was younger. In this deletion request we are bound to raise a speculation that would be correct in the event that we assumed that the photographer was less than 20 years old at the time of taking the photograph and would have waited more than 80 years to publish it for the first time after 1995. But again I invite you to go through the categories where the template is used, and we would find ourselves with the need to delete a large number of historical images.--Nikos3194 (talk) 08:01, 2 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You say I'm correct, yet you still say we should keep the image? Strange. I'm sure that among the millions of images on Commons we can find thousands, tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of images which shouldn't be here because they fail the test of the precautionary principle. I propose deletion when I encounter such images. That there are probably many more images which should or must be deleted however cannot be an argument to keep this one. BTW, do you know {{PD-old-assumed}}? With that template we assume the author is most likely dead for at least 70 years (though that may not be true) if the image is at least 120 years old. That is certainly not the case here. --Rosenzweig τ 21:19, 2 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
