Grand Arche de la Défense en gros plan. No FOP in France for architectural works. Poudou99 (talk) 22:21, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

This is a photograph I took myself in Paris in 1990. I don't know what "FOP" means, but the copyright is mine - I can provide evidence of the original photo I took if needed. --LeicesterChris (talk) 10:17, 27 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @LeicesterChris: My answers in your user talk page. --Poudou99 (talk) 18:25, 27 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the clarification, @Poudou99: - that makes sense, and I didn't realise such a law existed in France. What confuses me, though, is that there is an entire category devoted to "Quality images of public buildings in Paris", which have all been approved by admins. Shouldn't they all be deleted too, if this is in breach of the law? --LeicesterChris (talk) 21:09, 27 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @LeicesterChris: . Freedom of Panorama grants (among many other things) buildings a protection under copyright. But at the end, the copyright expires at some point in time -- after which, the work is now under the public domain, and can be reused freely.

Thanks for that clarification, @Acagastya: - that makes sense. As I understand it, we do have Freedom of Panorama in the UK, so for now I'll just stick with uploading images from the UK. It's a shame, because some of the pictures I have that may of historic interest (like the Soviet Union ones) appear definitely NOT to be allowed (Russia only adopted limited FOP in 2014, and my photos were taken in 1989), so I'll make all non-UK images that I've uploaded for deletion. LeicesterChris (talk) 12:03, 7 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@LeicesterChris: Now, I am not sure how to approach FOP of states which do not exist anymore -- Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Soviet Union says the duration of copyright was author's life + 25 years. If the architect of the building has been dead for more than 25 years, it should be okay to upload. Also, if your photos are being deleted for no-FoP -- they will be restored once they enter into public domain. It is a shame, yes, but hopefully, the Evil Mouse won't succeed extending copyright to extreme levels of absurdity across the world.

@Acagastya: Haha, I like the Evil Mouse bit! Thanks for that - very useful to know! LeicesterChris (talk) 12:28, 7 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
