Commons:Deletion requests/File:Flag of Umayyad.svg
per COM:EDUSE and COM:WEBHOST: self-made fan-flag with elements that are anachronistic (crescent-and-star) and incorrect (green color, the Umayyads used white). One of a series of such fictional flags that have cropped up in recent weeks. Constantine ✍ 17:34, 5 February 2022 (UTC)
could be kept:Byzantine emblems had a crescent and a star (8 pointed)(for examble, the flag of the capital, Constantinople), and so such symbols are not anachronistic. İn addition, the green color and the crescent symbol were used a lot by the umayyads. so the flag can be like this. Fardsk 11:41, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
- If you mean File:Constantinople-Banner.svg, this is equally anachronistic. 'the green color and the crescent symbol were used a lot by the umayyads' is a very misleading statement. Green is, of course, a color associated with Muhammad, and crescent symbols have been around for much longer than Islam; for example, crescent-and-star symbols were minted on Sasanian coins, and carried over into Umayyad coinage that copied the Sasanian dirhams. See the Encyclopaedia of Islam article on the crescent for more. In short, there is no consistent usage of the crescent as a state or dynastic emblem, rather than as an occasional decorative motif, until the 19th-century Ottoman Empire. Indeed, the crescent was first adopted in Western Europe to denote the Muslim lands and faith in art, portolans, etc., already from the 15th century. In any case, the 'use' of green or the crescent by the Umayyads does not mean that any combination featuring green and a crescent, inspired by modern Islamic flags, can be used as a quasi-representative flag of the Umayyads. Kept: No reason for deletion of this file. According to the Deletion policy a supposedly incorrect, original researched or not-neutral file is not a reason for deletion. This aspect should be addressed on the projects. The file is currently in use on the projects, so it has to be maintained. User:Fardsk has meanwhile replaced the image with a blank version. I do not know the reason, but I restored the original flag. --Ellywa (talk) 10:56, 12 July 2022 (UTC)
