I've been unable to find this painting referenced (or depicted) anywhere at the National Art Museum of Ukraine. The actual fragment of the 19th century painting (or mural) can be found here and here without any text. The painting being used as being both 19th century and anonymous looks like relatively recent reinterpretation, and it's also highly likely that the artist is attributed... and very possibly still alive. - No! :) You said it is copyvio! So, You need to provide evidences! The uploader informed, that the source is museum (so, this is a photograph of painting from museum) and this is a painting of 19th century. If it is old, it is free to be upload. If you believe it is modern painting, protected by copyright, you need to provide the source with the related information. - Actually, Mr.Rivermen has provided a good source (з чигиринщини зберігається в НХМУ here) for determining that this is a 19th century picture to be found in Chyhyryn Raion. The description, however, is not accurate and I've amended it. Per the text "Саме у XVIII ст. під впливом гайдамаччини картина «Козак Мамай» композиційно змінюється, розширюється у своєму змісті: з’являються живописні полотна з «гайдамацькими сценами». «На них подані так звані «сцени розправи» гайдамак зі своїми противниками – суд, який вершить Мамай; на деревах повішені (часто – вниз головою) чоловічі постаті». Є епізоди, де козаки варять страву в казанку, полюють, рибалять. Події відбуваються, як правило, в лісі або біля річки. «Гайдамаччина, яка йшла з нижчих і середніх верств української людності і була не тільки простим розбоєм, але й ідейним протестом проти економічних, соціальних і національних болячок свого часу, відбилась у народній поезії і не могла не зоставити значного сліду на народній картині». Д. Щербаківський вважає, що саме часи гайдамаччини «безіменному козаку-бандуристу, у «якого ім’я було не одно, а єсть їх до ката», добавляє ім’я «Мамай», ім’я, яке перейшло потім і на копії старих картин козака – бандуриста і тепер, не зовсім справедливо, закріплено за всіма взагалі варіантами цієї картини»." [own bolding] I've amended it to reflect a better description as the man hanging upside-down is an arendator. They were usually Jews as, unfortunately for the Jewish community in both the Polish and Russian Empires, their occupations were proscribed by law to the most unpopular occupations.
