Commons:Deletion requests/File:Castellammarese War.jpg
There are photographic images of two different people used in this File. The image on the right is a booking photo of New York gangster Joe Masseria, it's fine and is in the public domain. The image on the left, however, is incorrectly identified (on the File itself and not just in the description) as Salvatore Maranzano a gangster who opposed Masseria during the "Castellammarese War"; but it is in fact an image of London gangster Salvatore Messina, who had nothing to do with that event. The image of Messina comes from an article in the August 13, 1967 edition of the London Sunday Times entitled "Messinas and Mayfair: the Links Remain". Since the image first appeared in 1967, it's unclear if the image is still under copyright or not. It presumeably dates from at least the early 1950's when Messina fled Britiain to escape prosecution. See the discussion on the Salvatore Maranzano talk page on the English version of Wikipedia if you need more information about the image. Libertybison (talk) 20:41, 16 May 2017 (UTC)
- Comment The file is in use in several Wikipedia articles. @Libertybison: you should replace them and/or cut the photo in order to just have Joe Masseria's photo. --Ruthven (msg) 13:27, 23 May 2017 (UTC)
- There already is a version of the Masseria photo here. Libertybison (talk) 15:17, 23 May 2017 (UTC)
- @Ruthven: , I removed the File from all the articles in which it appeared. I also added the Masseria image to the French Castellemarese War article as a replacement. Libertybison (talk) 01:50, 2 June 2017 (UTC)
