Commons:Deletion requests/File:Black Dog Pub Sign, Bouley, Jersey.jpg
Photo of a pub sign: no clear statement from the uploader that they are the sign's original artist in addition to being the photographer. McGeddon (talk) 19:04, 5 January 2016 (UTC)
Hi McGeddon. I'm neither the artist nor the photographer of the sign, though I did edit the contrast of the image in Photoshop some years back. I think it does add quite a lot to the content of the articles in which it's been used (the 2 English ones at least; I can't honestly vouch for all 20 others). I reckon it probably scrapes in on the criteria of fair use; if it doesn't meet the requirements of categories 4 (Other promotional material) or 7 (Paintings and other works of visual art) if the articles are not commenting critically on the image, then category 8 (Images with iconic status or historical importance: Iconic or historical images that are themselves the subject of sourced commentary in the article are generally appropriate) or, failing that, category 9 (Images that are themselves subject of commentary) must surely fit the bill? The sign contains not only the image of the black dog, but also the name of the pub in English and Jèrriais [1], the language of Jersey. SiGarb (talk) 18:01, 6 January 2016 (UTC)
Deleted: While it may qualify for Fair Use treatment on WP:EN, Commons, as a repository, cannot and does not permit Fair Use. Both the photograph and the sign itself have copyrights, neither of which are freely licensed here. . Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 15:26, 12 January 2016 (UTC)
