DW rather than own work. No authorship information on the base map, unknown copyright situation. Jcb (talk) 23:52, 5 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

There are around a lot of similar locator maps, based on the same base map or another, including many created by the same author of this image. This is not a singular case, so we should discuss them all at once I suppose. --XXN, 09:15, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That's not practically possible. This image has the reported problem. You cannot expect a nominator to find all files with the same problem before starting a DR. Jcb (talk) 16:04, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it's clearly above TOO. Jcb (talk) 22:08, 10 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think so. This is a simple map which shows common knowledge (all those borders can't be copyrighted). A few colors added doesn't make it copyrightable. There are thousands of other similar maps around the world, created by various authors, and they all look almost identical. This isn't even a physical map which would have been more chances to be declared original enough to be copyrighted. --XXN, 08:15, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Then you don't understand how maps are created. Maps are flat, but the earth isn't, so that map maker have to make choices on how to project three-dimensional borders on a flat map. There are many possibilities and map makers can have many reasons to give priority to one aspect or another. There are indeed public domain maps, but that's normally not because they would be too simple. The maps for the CIA World Factbook are PD and also the maps of OpenStreetMaps. If this map would be derived from such a PD map, it would be fine, but now no source information is included, we do not know the copyright situation, so that the file will have to be deleted. In the future, please don't transfer files with inadequat source information to Commons. Jcb (talk) 09:49, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
