Backus left military service in *May* 1946, where as this work dated 1946 and depicts *autumn* of that year. As there is no proof that this painting was made before May 1946, this image is not in the PD. --Laitr Keiows (talk) 04:50, 29 February 2012 (UTC)
Keep It's true that Standish Backus returned to civilian life around May 1946, soon becoming a teacher for the University of California from 1947-1948. But he draw the scene of Autumn of 1945 (see wreck of tram etc.) and he drew in 1946. If this work had not been drawn in his service, why the USN exibits this work ? globalsecurity also provides this work. Anyway I'm interested in this detail and personally continuing to research it. - Keep I agree with Takabeg. It seems very unlikely that Backus was in Japan in any capacity, civilian or Navy, after May, 1946, so I think that this was almost certainly created from a visit to Hiroshima in the autumn of 1945 and then actually painted while he was still in the Navy in early 1946. - Keep I just received a reply from a NHC person and I am being told that this work in fact was made during 1945, but finished later in 1946 before Backus left his military service. Now we have a proof that this painting was made before May 1946 and this request can be safely closed. Laitr Keiows (talk) 01:55, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
