This file was initially tagged by AntiCompositeBot as no license (User:AntiCompositeBot/NoLicense/tag). Earliest known publication is from 1933 (the author of the book died in 1959 but may not be the photographer). Photograph itself could be public domain in the UK, but it doesn't seem likely to be public domain in the US yet. Abzeronow (talk) 21:24, 7 March 2021 (UTC)
As I am the user who uploaded the file and holding a copy of the document from which the picture comes, I can attest that while the publication is from 1933, the photograph which was used on the cover of the document (and photographer is not referenced in the document) is c1900, although definitely pre 1905. This is known due to the absence of a building in the background which dates from 1905. As a resident of the village of Lesmahagow, these facts are verifiable by the buildings present and also the history traceable from the UK Ordnance Survey mapping from reviewing the maps published from the surveys of 1858[1], 1896[2] and 1909[3]. As the photographer is not stated in the book and there are no other records of this photograph available then PD-UK-unknown
applies as the photograph was made available by publication more than 70 years ago with an unknown author. I have tagged the image accordingly. Alternatively, we might also use PD-old-assumed
as the photo was taken in c. 1900 although as it could have been taken as late as 1905 we're not quite at the 120 years margin for that template. More generally, it is rather unlikely that the photographer and the author are one and the same given the time lapse between the taking of the photograph and the publication of the book. As regards, a US copyright tag, I fear that it is not yet out of copyright in the USA unless we can find a published copy dating before 1 January 1926 (so we can use PD-US-expired
). Greenshed (talk) 23:22, 2 June 2021 (UTC)
Kept: per explanation of Greenshed, reasonable to assume the image is in PD in UK. --Ellywa (talk) 11:41, 8 December 2021 (UTC)
