Breeding eastern Asia; wintering southern Asia, northern Australasia. Three subspecies are accepted (IOC archive copy at the Wayback Machine, H. r. tytleri (breeds south-central Siberia, Mongolia), H. r. gutturalis (breeds temperate eastern Asia), and H. r. saturata (breeds eastern Siberia), with much mixing on the southern Asian wintering grounds, where individuals are rarely identifiable to subspecies.
