Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.--EugeneZelenko 15:47, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

SVG Inkscape feedback
[edit]Thank you! Yes, I tried that, and it looks OK (with weird line sizing in the fonts - maybe I should object to path the fonts too!) but with arrowheads in the actual picture. It's just the preview on the image page that looks wrong now. I figure I should wait a while to see if the cache updates? Or do I need to get an admin to kick it? --Malcolm Gin 19:10, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
- Firefox ain't helping me, and even "?action=purge" on the end of the URL didn't help. I see some errors I need to fix on the image anyway, so I'll try re-uploading. Thank you for all your help. I'll get a kick from an admin if all else fails. --Malcolm Gin 19:23, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
- Huh, you're right. I did Object to path because someone's help page (on Wikipedia, I think) suggested it. I'll back off changes, re-do some work (my fonts got all messed up and I didn't have an older copy pre-mess-up) and then do stroke to path instead of object to path. I'll get it eventually. :) Thanks for the help. --Malcolm Gin 00:21, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

We need your help
[edit]we're currently in a coup d etat on the en:WP:PERU, I'm looking to vectorize maps and things like that, i've tried Inkscape but I'm a dumb, wonder if you could help me by vectorizing this Image:Location of Apurimac region.png, thanks a lot --Andersmusician $ 05:24, 23 May 2007 (UTC)
- Maps are a pain to vectorise - you need much higher-resolution source images to get a final image of the same rendered quality. If you could find a much higher-resolution image (or a paper one that I could scan) then I might be able to do it in a few weeks once my finals have finished. Until then I'm taking a partial wikibreak (non-vectorising edits only). Stannered 09:47, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

Error in SVG version of Diamond road sign unprotected quay
[edit]Hi there,
Noticed you've done some SVG versions of the Irish road signs I did up as pngs. There's an error in one of them; Image:Diamond road sign unprotected quay.svg does not have the correct design of car pictogram. Compare with en:Image:Diamond road sign unprotected quay.png and Image:Ireland coast sign.jpg; the actual sign has a distinctive old-style "coupé" type car pictogram.
Regards,
Zoney 23:57, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
- I actually taced from the first image you linked, there were just insufficient pixels for me to accurately determine the car's design. I'll try and redo from the jpeg when I get a chance. Stannered 00:00, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

Hello, and thank your for sharing your files with Commons. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. Please remember that all uploads require source, author and license information. Could you please resolve these problems, which are described on the page linked in above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which information may be missing. Thank you.

SVG tagging
[edit]Would you mind doing anything useful? Code·is·poetry 06:39, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
- The SVG subtags exist for a reason. If not me, then whom? (And the answer, based on the vast number of images in the category which have easily-attributable subcategories, is no one.) In case it failed to attract your attention, I also have over 1000 image uploads, the vast majority of which are SVG versions of images where were taged SVG either here or on :en. Stannered 09:48, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
- Well, I still don’t get the point. Why not just svging some files without these tags? Nevertheless, do your work as you like to ;-) Code·is·poetry 15:03, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
- There are almost 6000 images with SVG on. There are a few people doing brilliant work converting to SVG, some of whom specialise on particular types of image. The subcategories are there to help those people find those images. By making sure that images go into the right categories, it removes clutter from the base category (same as any category dispersion effort does), meaning that those who tend to do non-specific SVGs can find those without having to wade through pages and pages of flags, coats of arms, and maps. It takes at least 10 minutes to do a non-trivial SVG file and upload and link it - this clears one image from the category. In 10 minutes I can probably clear 50 or more files out by dispersing them into more appropriate categories, which in turn means that they will probably be converted more quickly by other editors. Stannered 15:20, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

polyhedron and polytope graph conversion
[edit]Hi Ed. Whenever you have some time and inspiration, I made a new polyhedron image in MSPaint that could be converted to SVG: Image:Petrie polygons.png, for en:Petrie polygon. It could be done as-is, or if you can play a little, you could rotate a few of the polyhedra diagrams so all have their vertex centered UP. I was lazy when I collected them and rotating with pixels causes artifacts I didn't want. Anyway, help is greatly appreciated whenever is convenient! Thanks Tomruen (talk) 22:25, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
- Where did you "collect" the images from? I'm slightly concerned about licensing issues... Stannered (talk) 22:50, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
Hi again! One more conversion if you like. I did my own "trace" in PNG of a lo-res graph at [2], as Image:24-cell graph ortho.png. If you wanted to try replacing it, I'm sure you could do a bit better with SVG. My trace is inexact of course, limited to my patience to draw lines with MSPaint.
A MUCH HARDER CHALLENGE, I just copied the lo-res graphs for the 120-cell and 600-cell en:Image:120-cell_graph_ortho.png and en:Image:600-cell_graph_ortho.png from [3] and [4]. They are much too complicated to trace I think even if the resolution was better, but maybe I can generate them myself by my polyhedron program if I can get the correct view plane, and then perhaps if I gave you some vector coordinate output you could convert the data to SVG? Just a thought. :)
Whatever help is appreciated, no hurry.

Thanks for fixing that small error so quickly :-). There are a couple of other changes that I think should be made, but they are points where the original PNG image is at fault too. The labels for the vertex and ocelli should be slightly different. See this image [5] which I think is the original from which the PNG was made. The "vertex" is the top of the head, not the back. The "ocelli" are small eye like sensors on the top of the head too, in a triangular layout, from the side you would see just two which is what the original had labelled (the ocelli look like black discs). Also I have just noticed that the "gena" is not the gap between the head and thorax, but is apparently the bit of the head behind the eye. Finally I think the line between the wings (19 and 20) should be thicker like the rest of the wing outline - but that may just be a stylistic thing :-). You may of course want to refer to other sources before making these changes :-) --Tony Wills (talk) 21:25, 14 February 2009 (UTC)

Hello Stannered, i changed your PageRank example image in two ways: Firstly, i added the exact solution for the PageRank-Values at the description page, and secondly, i added the percent sign (%) to the values in the image itself because of a discussion in the german wikipedia concerning your (in my view very great!) image. --Frakturfreund (talk) 16:34, 8 July 2009 (UTC)

- Thank you for the hint, but vectorization is at least so important as writing useless creepy formulas ;-). But besides, do you have experience with this strange A bot has found 3 similar images of this file remark which just recently appeared on the description page? It looks as if someone uses the graphic outside the wikipedia, hence the bots concluded that there may be a licence problem with it. I could add myself the proposed »checked« template, but i am new here at Commons and don’t want to be too quick on the trigger … Greetings, --Frakturfreund (talk) 01:26, 9 July 2009 (UTC)
- I hadn't seen that before. Lots of images (particularly photographs) added to Commons by inexperienced users with little understanding of copyright (and Commons's policy on it) upload images from all over the web - this bot seems to use TinEye to look for them. However, since it can't tell the difference, it will also pick up images that have been taken from here and used elsewhere. I've marked it as checked now :-) Stannered (talk) 12:10, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 02:23, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

Hello Stannered, Thanks for your contributions to the project so far. I've nominated your file for speedy deletion. See my rationale at the above page. This is a courtesy notice. Thanks, –blurpeace (talk) 15:29, 9 September 2009 (UTC)
- …the above page has been deleted… Stannered (talk) 19:44, 9 September 2009 (UTC)
- Ah, the deletion log had the rationale mentioned. Stannered (talk) 19:45, 9 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit]No offence intended, but "minimisation" is spelled "minimization" in the below: UNIT A4B1 (talk) 02:40, 15 October 2009 (UTC)
- No, it's definitely spelled "minimisation" in the image. If you meant to say that it should be spelled "minimization", then I should point out that minimisation seems to disagree. Stannered (talk) 22:18, 15 October 2009 (UTC)
MP3 SVG
[edit]I don't usually login (normally I'm on wiki anonymously) - however saw that you did an SVG rendering of the mp3 diagram - Thanks! Kim Meyrick (talk) 23:30, 14 February 2010 (UTC)
File:SoCDesignFlow.gif vs. File:SoCDesignFlow.svg
[edit]Hi Ed, do you notice the small difference between the original File:SoCDesignFlow.gif and the vectorized File:SoCDesignFlow.svg? In the lowest left box, the former reads (imho correctly) "Volume IC Fabrication" while the latter reads "Prototype IC Fabrication" (which seems to be a c&p from that box just above it). Do you have time to fix it? Else just let me know on my talk page and I will fix the SVG file. Thanks! --Abdull (talk) 21:12, 16 March 2010 (UTC)
- Hi Abdull - I didn't notice until you pointed it out, and now I don't notice it any more :-) Thanks for the heads up! Stannered (talk) 07:54, 17 March 2010 (UTC)
Hi! I see you are the author of File:Saulkrastu gerbonis.svg. Any chance you could redo the image with the new coat of arms? I would prefer to not upload a .PNG. Here is the new one on LV wiki. Here is the news article. Thanks! — HELLKNOWZ ▎TALK ▎enWP TALK 11:09, 12 January 2011 (UTC)

The color means something?
[edit]Hello, I made a simple translation of an image created by you, but I changed the colors am not sure if I did right and im not sure if I should restore the original colors, Do the colors have a meaning in the concept of the image? Request
[edit]Hello. I have a request for you on two Euler diagrams.
May you please do a symmetrical version of File:AtheismImplicitExplicit4.svg?
Also, may you please make an SVG version of File:Theological positions.png?
Please let me know if you will, and tell me after you uploaded them if so.

[edit]Created a "blank" SVG version of the file 2d_political_spectrum.png which can be annotated with overlay text in any language and is also more accessible. Do you happen to know where I could go to get help translating the code?--Abel (talk) 00:41, 20 June 2012 (UTC)

File:Charged-particle-drifts.svg
[edit]Hi, thanks for adding the image. If it's ok I redrew just a few bits to:
- make curves actual smooth curves (not a collection of squares tightly coiled into circles),
- slightly realign columns of arrows vertically.
Thanks again - very nice diagram! Maschen (talk) 23:06, 9 September 2012 (UTC)

Wordsearch Error
[edit]When you converted File:Wordsearch.png to File:Wordsearch.svg you changed the first clue from "Seek" to "Week". "Week" is not in the grid whereas "Seek" is so I assume it's a typo. --109.176.197.196 18:47, 20 November 2012 (UTC)
